Detailed Description
Kondapally toys, with a history of above 400 years, are made ofa soft wood known as Tella Poniki which is found near Kondapally hills. The artisans who make these toys are known as Arya Kshatriyasalso known as Nakarshalu who are said to have migrated from Rajasthan to Kondapally in Andhra Pradesh in the 16th Century. There is a special colony in the name of Bommala Colony (translates to Toys Colony) where the crafting takes place. Oil colors, Vegetable dyes and water colors are used in general to paint the carved toys.
